150 kilograms.
Then I shut up
and listened.

Eight months later I was 40 kilograms lighter and I had never weighed a single leaf of spinach. My wife and daughter ate the same dinners I did. I'm a chef. I just needed someone to teach me what food was actually for.

What the photos don't show.

The 40 kilograms are the least interesting part of this.

I sleep now. Through the night, and I get up without needing twenty minutes to turn back into a person. My stomach stopped being a daily negotiation, and I'd spent years assuming that was just something I had to live with. There's something left in the evenings instead of nothing. I can get down on the floor with my daughter and get back up again without making a noise.

And I stopped hiding from cameras. That one took the longest, and it's the one I'd have paid for first.

That's my experience, not a promise. Bodies are different and so are lives. But it's the reason I stopped thinking about any of this as a diet.

Where I'm at

No shortcuts.

I'm not taking on paying clients yet, and that's on purpose.

Losing 40 kilograms qualifies me to talk about losing 40 kilograms. It doesn't qualify me to programme for you.

This industry is full of people who read a few articles, bought a template and started charging. I'm not doing that. I'm going through the proper route instead. I'm about to start my Level 2 and Level 3 with HFE, taken together, and Level 4 Nutrition after that. Ofqual regulated and properly assessed.

Until that's done I'll be putting out what I'm learning. Free guides, checklists and PDFs on training and eating that you can actually use. No gatekeeping and no "DM me for a plan".

When I do open the doors it'll be because I'm qualified, not because I got impatient.

My story

The photo I couldn't unsee.

An "On This Day" notification came up on my phone. Me asleep on the couch with my newborn daughter on my chest. My wife thought it was the sweetest picture in the world. I looked at it and went cold. My chest was huge. My face wasn't mine. Then I worked out the photo was already months old, which meant I wasn't even that size anymore. I was bigger.

I got on the scale for the first time in years. 150 kilograms.

I'd spent over twenty years in kitchens by then. Started at fourteen. Gleneagles, London, Cape Town, Glasgow. Fourteen hour shifts, thirty thousand steps a day, dinner eaten standing over a bin. I put the bottle down for good in February 2022, went back to university, got out, and landed a desk job in IT. It felt like winning. My feet stopped hurting. I had evenings and weekends for the first time in my adult life. And I got heavier every single month without clocking it, because I had stopped moving and I had not stopped cooking.

A friend put me on to a coach called Steph. I turned up expecting a drill sergeant. A spreadsheet, six days a week, weighing everything. He gave me a list of normal food instead. Meat, potatoes, rice, veg. Eat from the list. No scales, no apps. Two or three sessions a week. It felt far too slow, and I did it anyway.

I gave him one rule. My family comes first. I wasn't cooking two dinners or eating out of tubs while they ate properly, so we all ate my dinner. Same food on every plate, smaller portions on theirs. My wife lost 15 kilograms without ever going on a diet. My daughter still gets her cake, because she's a child and she needs it.

Eight months later the 40 kilograms were gone. I did it through buying a house, gutting it, a full time job and a toddler. None of it was extreme. That's the part nobody tells you.

That's why I want to coach. Not because I found something clever, but because what worked was simple and I had to be 150 kilograms before anyone showed me. I'm getting qualified properly first.

If you're ready now

Don't wait for me.

Go to Steph.

Stephan Du Toit, of CSBodyfusion. He's the coach who did this with me, and he's taking clients today, which is more than I can say.

He works with IFBB pros, but that isn't why I'd send you to him. I'd send you because I turned up at 150 kilograms braced to be shouted at, and he handed me a list of normal food and told me to eat from it. Because when I couldn't last two minutes on a rowing machine he swapped it for a walk instead of making me feel small about it. He treated me like an adult who had a life to fit this around.

I get nothing for this. No commission, no arrangement, no deal of any kind. He charges what a good coach charges and I paid it myself, at a point where spending money on me felt wrong. It's the best money I've spent.

He'll be a better coach than I am for a good while yet. Go and talk to him.
